Sargent Proud of CHE Formula Ford Success

Tom Sargent said he is honoured to be a part of his CHE Racing squad’s most successful weekend to date, after scoring another race win and finishing second overall behind his team-mate in Round 4 of the Australian Formula Ford Championship at The Bend Motorsport Park on the weekend.

The result has solidified Sargent’s title bid, the Young driver moving up to second in the series points, just 14 away from the leader.

Sargent qualified fourth, but some intelligent race-craft enabled him to finish first in the opening race.

“The main straight at The Bend is very long, and there are some situations where you don’t actually want to be leading, because the cars behind will just slipstream past you,” Sargent said.

“I swapped the lead with some other drivers a few times, but I was in the lead when it counted.”

Sargent was involved in another cut-throat contest with several other drivers in Race 2, and had again taken the lead on the final lap. Unfortunately, an over-ambitious move from another competitor forced Sargent off the road in the very last corner, relegating him to fifth.

“I was disappointed by some of the driving in that race,” Sargent said.

“I had worked my way into a good position once again, and another driver tried an overtaking move that was never going to be successful. It cost me another race win, which was very frustrating.”

Not to be discouraged, Sargent channelled his focus for the third and final race of the weekend, moving from fifth on the grid up to second behind his CHE team-mate Lachlan Mineeff.

“The battle for second was pretty intense, and by the time I had overtaken those cars, I ran out of time to catch Lachlan,” Tom said.

“Congratulations to Lachlan on the round win – he drove really well. I’m very proud to be part of the CHE Racing Team’s first 1-2 result in Formula Ford – it’s a reward for Colin and Cameron Hill, and our mechanics Glenn Higgins and Shaun Tidyman for how hard they’ve been working.

“We struggled a bit in the previous round at Winton, but here both of our cars were well and truly on the pace this weekend, especially in race conditions where he had the speed to overtake other cars and race right at the front.”

The Australian Formula Ford Championship resumes at Sandown, 20-21 July.
